The Money behind a Boxing Match

by admin on October 28, 2011

It’s no secret that Boxers earn millions.  Many of the big names in boxing flaunt their wealth around by buying expensive cars and houses or wasting it on expensive nights out and bottles of champagne.  This money is well earned because these boxers put their lives on the line for the sake of entertainment and the pursuit of victory in the ring.

While the boxing matches often attract big sponsors that will sponsor the match, most of the income for the match comes from ticket sales for fans to be in the arena when the fight happens and from the HBO pay per view sales.  In big matches, the stakes are much higher and boxers stand to make a huge sum of money depending largely on how many people tune in to these HBO broadcasts.  Some of the big names in boxing can earn up to $30 million in a single fight, provided the pre-fight publicity was enticing enough to draw the fans.

The boxers aren’t the only ones to benefit from the income however.  Managers, promoters, trainers and producers need to be paid too, as does all the hired help around the venue.  This all comes from the final amount made from the fight and is divided according to a contract signed before the fight begins.  The winning boxer will get the biggest percentage, followed by the losing boxer and so it goes down the line as the percentages get smaller.

On the 12th of November defending WBO World Welterweight Champion Manny Pacquiao takes on challenger Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.  These fighters, two of the biggest names active in boxing in the world right now are set to fight an explosive fight and boxing enthusiasts the world over are waiting to see which one of the two men will walk away with the prize money. You can watch Pacquaio vs Marquez live online too!
